Life on Mars
The recent launch of Elon Musk’s rocket has reminded me of a space program I researched almost a year ago in science. Mars One plans to have people on Mars by 2024. I find it insane that people are planning on colonizing a new planet and most people haven't heard about it yet. I think we need similar programs like this to promote space development as well as more media attention. Although space travel has developed, the journey will not be risk free. The astronauts that are going to have a ‘one-way ticket’ and do not plan on returning. Due to this, obstacles such as damaged space suits could be fatal and many medical issues can not be treated on Mars. The choosing process to select the astronauts that do get to go to space is also intense. Out of 200,000+ applicants, no more than 24 for will be chosen. The group of 24 for will be divided into 6 groups up 4. A new group will land on Mars every 26 months. A living settlement will be built big enough to grow trees. All the equipment required that is not sent with them, will be sent before they arrive. The estimated cost is currently 4 billion US dollars. People all over the world can apply and do not have to be astronauts. The astronauts are in charge of governing mars themselves and are expected to come up with rules and regulations fairly. Since its a smaller group they will not require a complex form of government. Although construction, maintenance and research will be a big use of their time, astronauts will also be able to do similar things as they would on Earth. They are free to paint, read, watch TV, workout in the gym, etc. The astronauts will also have the option to use the internet but there is a huge time delay and will be limited to their preferred sites. Other websites will take 6-45 minutes, 3-22 to load after the first click to reach Earth and another 3-22 to reach back to Mars. Due to this time delay real time diolouage is not possible. What's so special about Mars? Out of all the planets in our solar system, mars is the most similar to Earth. Water is able to extracted from the soil and the days are only just over 39 minutes longer. Scientist also believe that humans will be able to adapt to Mars’ gravity. Mars-One
